Jack, a 10-year-old Black Lab, has a personality that shines and about four years ago, he underwent a total hip replacement on his right side. Recently, his owners brought him into therapy because they noticed he was limping more on his non-surgical leg. They suspected his left hip might need a replacement as well.
After a thorough evaluation, I discovered the real issue. Jack was limping on his left leg because his right leg remained very weak. As a result, he was overcompensating with his left leg. To address this, we started a tailored therapy plan.
We began with soft tissue work, dry needling, and stretching exercises targeting both his hind limbs and spine. Once we started relieving his stiffness and inflammation, we introduced incline treadmill exercises to strengthen his legs. We then added weight training to build his muscle strength.
Over time, Jack made remarkable progress. He’s now one of my strongest patients, and his enthusiasm for weight-pulling during therapy is contagious! The treats definitely keep him motivated! Not only has Jack gained strength, but he’s also back to playing fetch on weekends with his owners.
His total hip replacement recovery journey is ongoing, but Jack is stronger and more mobile than ever. His dedication to therapy and his owners’ commitment to his care have paid off. We’re excited to see him continue to thrive.
Go Jack! Keep up the great work! You’re a true inspiration. Your journey proves that with the right therapy, dogs can regain strength and live life to the fullest!
